What We Do

Literacy skills play a key role in various economic and social outcomes of Canadians. Literacy has a direct impact on productivity, income, labour force participation, health, poverty reduction, and civic engagement.

The Ontario Literacy Coalition makes adult learning opportunities possible by inspiring ideas and informing action. We partner with literacy, business, labour, settlement and academic communities to promote four strategies:

  • Learning for Work
  • Learning for Life
  • Learning for Families
  • Build Effective Systems and Practices
  • The OLC believes programming and policy are two key factors in building effective learning systems and practices. Therefore, “What We Do” in terms of Building Effective Systems and Practices is divided into Building Field Capacity and Advising Public Policy.

    Our goals are to:

    • Understand the state of adult learning in Ontario by gathering data and intelligence on literacy and related issues.
    • Develop partnerships and alliances so as to broaden the support for literacy efforts in the province.
    • Build capacity and encourage professional development opportunities.
    • Advise the public sector, the literacy field and other organizations to enable them to shape policy and guide program development.

The OLC is organized to support learning wherever it happens. This portion of the website is organized according to OLC strategies.
