Family Literacy

Literacy activities at home lay the foundation for learning to read and write, as well as a foundation for a life long love of learning. Family literacy is about the ways families use literacy and language in their daily lives. "Family" includes parents and children, as well as other caregivers and extended family.

The OLC became involved in Family Literacy as a means of exploring prevention strategies in response to the high number of people in Ontario and throughout Canada who had identified literacy challenges. We found what the Family Literacy community had known all along, that one of the strongest tools in supporting literacy development was working with children and their parents to support children’s early literacy development by giving the parents the skills to support good literacy activities in the home.

The OLC's work in the area of Family Literacy is often supported through the OLC Working Group, Action for Family Literacy Ontario.
