There is a growing consensus in the field of literacy that family literacy programs are innovative and effective tools for addressing various social issues, such as drop-out rates and joblessness, as well as literacy issues in, and of, themselves.
Despite the proven importance of Learning for Families, several research studies conducted by the OLC revealed that family literacy in Ontario lacks consistent funding and a cohesive policy.
The OLC is working to address these issues through an initiative to increase the literacy of families in Ontario entitled Parnership Framework for Integrated Family Literacy Planning. This initiative entails research of family literacy programming in the province, including current policies and funding mechanisms. This information will then enable the OLC, our family literacy programming partners and the Ontario Government to collaborate toward a more streamlined and effective system. These discussions will begin in early 2011. To gain an understanding of the current situation of family literacy in Ontario, please see our research findings.
