For the last five years, the OLC has worked in close partnership with business, labour and training representatives to further the development of workplace literacy and essential skills in Ontario.
The partnership has grown and developed into the OLC’s Provincial Advisory Committee for Workplace and Workforce Literacy (PAC). The purpose of the PAC is to advance workplace and workforce literacy in Ontario. Currently the PAC encompasses 14 members representing national, provincial and regional points of view from umbrella organizations representing business, labour, literacy, and training and adult education. It has been a major accomplishment to bring these partners together and develop a common vision for workplace literacy in Ontario.
Currently, the focus of the PAC’s work is to make case with the Ontario government for a long-term Workplace Literacy Strategy in Ontario.
In its 2009 budget, the Ontario government included workplace literacy in its two-year additional 90 million dollars spending for adult literacy and basic skills. Further to this announcement, the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities announced a Call for Workplace and Community Workforce Literacy and Essential Skills initiatives one of which was granted to the OLC. The OLC and its partners are working to promote the extension of this funding beyond the government's two-year commitment.
