Membership Policies

Admission of Members

Membership in the Ontario Literacy Coalition (OLC) is open to any organization or individual who supports the purpose and goals of the OLC, applies for membership and pays applicable annual membership fees.

Categories of Membership

There will be two categories of members in the OLC: Individuals and Organizations. For membership purposes the following definitions will be used:

  • Individual Member is any person who has an interest in literacy or is a person with literacy challenges who may or may not be involved in a literacy program.
  • Organizational Member is any person in an organization involved in or with an interest in literacy.

Change in Membership Categories

An individual person may qualify to belong to more than one membership category but must choose to belong to one category at the time of membership renewal.

Representatives

Each organizational member has one vote. Each organizational member must name one individual to represent its organization.

Rights of Members

Every member has the right to:

  1. Attend, speak and vote at all general meetings or to appoint a representative to do so.
  2. Vote for all candidates to the Board of Directors.

Membership Fees
Membership fees will be decided by a majority vote of the Board of Directors.

Term of Membership
New members may join at any time of the year. Membership is for a one year (12 month) period.

Losing Membership

  1. Members will lose their membership if they do not pay their membership fees by a date that is sixty days after the date on which their membership is to come to an end.
  2. Members will lose their membership if the Board of Directors determines that they are actively working against the OLC's purposes. This decision will be made by the Board of Directors by majority vote.
